Pinot Blanc is a white grape variety that produces elegant, approachable wines with fresh fruit character and crisp acidity. It's a genetic mutation of Pinot Noir and is grown primarily in Alsace, France, as well as in Germany (where it's called Weissburgunder), Austria, and Italy (Pinot Bianco).
Pinot Blanc wines are typically light to medium-bodied with aromas and flavors of green apple, pear, white peach, and citrus, often accompanied by subtle notes of almond, white flowers, and a clean mineral finish. The wines are known for their refreshing acidity, smooth texture, and versatility, making them excellent food wines that pair well with a wide range of dishes.
In Alsace, Pinot Blanc is often vinified in stainless steel to preserve its fresh, pure fruit character, though some producers use oak for added complexity. The wines are generally meant to be enjoyed young, within 2-3 years of vintage, to capture their vibrant freshness. Pinot Blanc is also commonly used in sparkling wine production, particularly in Crémant d'Alsace.
The grape's neutral, elegant profile makes it an ideal everyday white wine—approachable, food-friendly, and offering excellent value. It's particularly well-suited to seafood, light poultry dishes, salads, and soft cheese.
