From the ancient hills of Carmignano in Tuscany — one of Italy's oldest and most historically significant wine zones — Fabrizio Pratesi crafts Carmione as a deeply personal expression of this undersung terroir. A Sangiovese-led blend in the great Carmignano tradition, Carmione draws on the estate's old vines and meticulous farming to produce a wine of remarkable complexity, elegance, and a distinctly Tuscan sense of place. The 2022 vintage delivered ideal growing conditions: warm days, cool nights, and a long, even ripening season that built concentration without sacrificing freshness.
Tasting Notes:
- Appearance: Deep ruby-garnet with violet highlights and excellent density
- Nose: Refined and layered — ripe Morello cherry, wild blackberry, and dried violet lead, followed by notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, leather, dark chocolate, and a subtle earthy, mineral undercurrent
- Palate: Full-bodied with firm, well-structured tannins and the bright, food-loving acidity that is Sangiovese's hallmark. Flavors of dark cherry, plum, graphite, and warm spice unfold with impressive depth and persistence
- Finish: Long, elegant, and complex — a wine that rewards patience and contemplation
Terroir & Winemaking:
Carmignano's unique position — west of Florence, on the slopes of Monte Albano — gives it a cooler, windswept microclimate that preserves natural acidity and aromatic complexity in the grapes. Pratesi farms with deep respect for the land, harvesting by hand and vinifying traditionally with extended maceration and aging in a combination of French barriques and larger Slavonian oak casks.
Drinking Window: Excellent now with decanting, and will evolve beautifully through 2035. Decant for 45–60 minutes. Serve at 64–68°F.
Perfect Pairings: Bistecca alla Fiorentina, wild boar ragù with pappardelle, roasted lamb with rosemary, aged Pecorino Toscano, or truffle-laced pasta.
